BRITISH TRADE UNIONS

“MOUNTING CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT” MEMORANDUM FOR T.U.C. CONFERENCE (NZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 31. "Confronted with mounting trade union criticism, the British Government has supplied the Trades Union Congress with a 6000-word memorandum which will form the crux of a vital debate at the annual conference of the council next week,” says Reuter’s political correspondent. “Sir Stafford Cripps worked on the draft memorandum during his holiday. “The British Government faces a growing industrial agitation against the operation of the ‘freeze wages, prices, and profits policy,’ and various industrial sections have alleged that the Government policy is not operating satisfactorily. They say that prices are still rising and profits still too high, while wages remain stationary. The Government will be considerably embarrassed if some of the resolutions before the conference are passed. “Authoritative sources underline that the Government case rests on facts, and that Sir Stafford Cripps has made no attempt to address a personal appeal to the workers.”
