FAMILY BENEFIT
Sir, —The family benefit (10s a child a week) is paid out on the eleventh of each month. Could you tell me, please, is that in respect to the month previous or in advance for that month; i.e., is the payment on August 11 for the month ending July 31, or for August? Also, if a child attains the age of 16 on July 30 and the benefit has been collected on August 11, should there be a refund?—Yours, etc., PUZZLED. August 19, 1948. [The following explanation was received from Mr E. A. Selman, registrar of the Social Security Department at Christchurch: “The payment on the eleventh of the month is for the whole of that month, so that the instalment paid out on August 11 covers the period August 1-31. If payment was received on August 11 in respect of a child who attained the age of 16 years on July 30, and who was not continuing his full-time education, an overpayment arises and a refund would be asked for.”]
