SHOWMEN’S LICENCES
Sir, —Please allow space to inquire from the City Council the method of granting licences to showmen working on the road space at Industries Fair. A showman is presented with an account for £35 for 10 feet of road space (this may seem exorbitant, but perhaps is justified by the cost of erecting the building over the roadway). Besides electric light charges, £1 is added for a City Council- licence. No council official issues a receipt or issues a licence. Approximately £27 would be collected for these licences. Would the city treasurer please advise how this amount is received on behalf of the ratepayers, and why a licence is not issued to the snowmen subscribing?—Yours, etc., OVER-EXPLOITED SHOWMAN.
August 20. 1948. [“The licence fee is collected from the promoters of the Industries Fair and is in accordance with the scale provided in the city by-laws,” said the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) in reply to this letter.]
