PLOUGHING MATCHES
Sir,—After attending most of the ploughing match fixtures one cannot help being impressed by what appears to be the unfair means by which a given standard of work is produced. In reading through the schedule I find plain skeiths and plain cast shares the only allowable type of equipment in sojne classes. On looking over the various ploughs, one finds skeiths with adjustable forks competing against the standard, factory-made article. No comment is needed after having seen what type of equipment wins the prizes. It is obvious we have three classes —full undercut, semi-undercut, and plain. Until this matter is rectified, ploughing match committees need not expect young ploughmen to come forward—Yours, etc., PLAIN SKEITH. July 19, 1948
