EXPENSIVE AND GALLANT RUTH

NEW HORSES IN DEVINE’S STABLE Expensive and Gallant Ruth are the latest additions to C. C. Devine’s team at Prebbleton. A five-year-old gelding, Expensive, which l was bred at Pukeuri by Mr J. Johnston, was purchased in the early part of his career by L. G. Smillie, who educated and trained him at Washdyke. At his only start in the 1945-46 season Expensive finished third to Orient Girl and Thelma Grattan in the second division of the Winter Trot Handicap at the Waimate Hunt Club’s meeting. Expensive gradually improved with racing experience and last season he finished in a place in 10 of his 20 races. His record included wins in the Kaiata Trot Handicap at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting on February 15. the Allenton Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on May 3, the Beaconsfield Trot Handicap at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on May 17, and the Harvest Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on May 31. This season Exnensive has started in 13 races for a fourth to Minoru, Silverlight. and Navy Queen m the Oxford Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6. By Sandydale which has sired the winners of 63 races this season. Expensive is out of Little Claire, which was successful at the pacing gait. By Guy Parrish or Matchlight. Little Claire is out of Muricata, by Mauritius from Ocean Wave, by Rothschild from Ripple, by Fleur de Ruth, which was bred at Washdyke by Mr R. J. Fidler, was purchased before she raced by the Tai Tapu trainer, W. L. Harris, who leased her to Messrs G. Woods and S. Ferguson. Gallant Ruth began her career under the guidance of H. J. Smith and at her second start for him as a four-year-old last season, she won the first division of the Rangiora Handicap Trot from Hardy Annual at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting. After gaining two fourths in her next seven starts. Gallant Ruth was transferred to J. Young's team, and for him she finished the season with two minor nlacings in six starts Gallant Ruth was taken over bv Harris early in the present season. A consistent son of Gold Bar and Lady Justice. Tekau. which has several minor placings to Ms credit, should soon win a race in the new season. Scottish Emperor looked particularly well when he was worked free-legged at Addington yesterday morning. A wellbred gelding by U. Scott from Princess Napoleon, Scottish Emperor, which is now trained by J. Young, gained his last win in the' Soring Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on October 6. 1945.
