CZECHS ARREST 79 PERSONS

TERRORIST ACTIVITIES ALLEGED REFUGEES FROM U.S. ZONE OF GERMANY (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, July 17. The Czechoslovak police have arrested 76 civilians and three soldiers *in connexion with terrorist activities by Czech political refugees returning secretly from the American zone of Germany,” says Reuter’s Prague correspondent. The refugees are alleged to have plotted political assassinations and espionage. Their plans, it is alleged, included the assassination of the Czech Minister of Defence (General Ludvik Svoboda) during the recent Sokol festival in Prague. A statement said the gang was given the task of murdering six Czechoslovak leaders. The arrested persons were described as “mostly young people who have been led astray.” They had been instructed to instigate “reactionary political misuses of the eleventh Sokol festival.” . The statement added: “A whole net of terrorists, accessories, and helpers has been uncovered and liquidated by interrogation and confessions.” Five short-wave transmitters, arms, ammunition, and “subversive leaflets” are stated to have been seized.
