PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXAMINATIONS Canterbury students who were successful in the last Chamber of Commerce examinations were presented with their certificates and- awards by the acting-president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr A. Henderson) on Saturday morning. Among the 31 diplomas and 157 certificates presented were the award of Christchurch Scholar, for the student gaining most passes with distinction, won by Miss Mary Graham, and the bronze medallion for shorthand, won by -Miss Joyce M. Wright, who came second in New Zealand. The Chamber of Commerce was a body of businessmen associated together for the betterment apd welfare of private enterprise and to maintain its strength and existence through its control of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of commodities, said Mr Henderson. “We hope that you will seek your vocation in those businesses which in their private enterprise are the real economic worth of the community. The examinations were inaugurated many years ago to enable businessmen to judge the merits of each, applicant when employing staff,”-he said. For the second successive year Christchurch had had more passes than any other centre, a result which was largely due to the high standard of teaching here, said Mr Henderson. Messrs T. H. Lawn, D. G. Woodrow, and W. G. V. Fernie also spoke.
