DEFENCE SYSTEM
Sir,—The Returned Services’ Association seems to be meeting with little success in its efforts to get the Government to organise an efficient defence system. It is, we must admit, a very serious matter. Anything on a big scale may be a terrific financial burden. But that is of less consideration than the inconvenience of spending so much time in camp and under discipline and the unpopularity and possibly the loss of votes incurred by the party responsible for bringing these things about. If there are such things as responsibility and duty it is noticeable that Mr R. M. Macfarlane is not interested in this phase of them but advises the R.S.A. not to meddle in politics. As a former serviceman and Home Guardsman I would favour a scheme organising all fit men into units with a minimum of training on a purely honorary basis. Instructors only would be paid.—Yours, etc., B PREPARED. July 14, 1948.
