AGED PACER TO RACE IN AUSTRALIA The 12-y ear-old pacer. Contender, which t has won £1230 in stakes this season, has been purchased by Mr E. Wright, and he will go to Australia to- race in the new season. Tantivy, a maiden pacer, will probably accompany Contender. Contender, which was bred by J. T. Paul at Mangere, is by Travis Axworthy from Bessie Bingen, by Nelson Bingen from Bertha Bell. Contender was educated and trained by Paul, and for him he won the 1938 Great Northern Trotting Stakes and the 1938 Great Northern Trotting Derby. After being purchased by Mr J. G. Gillard, Contender won several races. This season he has been trained by E. E. Cressey, who has had a remarkable run of successes with aged horses. Cressey was also successful this season with Whanako, which earned £1235 in stakes. Foaled in 1933, Whanako is by Peter Bingen from Tranquil, by Wildmoor from Casting. Besides Contender and Whanako, Cressey, who trained 16 winners this season, won races with Reclamation, Gamekeeper, Noble Triumph, Sure Echo, Belle Eagle, Legionaire, Fontaine, Lanoma, Sandy Park, and Noble de Oro. Contender, Noble Triumph, Sure Elcho, and Noble de Oro won two races each. On the form she showed to finish a nose behind Delphine in the second division of the Second Nursery Handicap at Cambridge on January 10, Tantivy should soon win a race in Australia. A four-year-old mare. Tantivy is by a fine performer in Lucky Jack from a winner in Elvo, which took a mile and a quarter record of 2min 42 4-ssec. By Oinako from the Galindo mare Elveno, Elvo left other winners in Elvo’s Pride to Nelson Derby and Moongold to Jack Potts.

Jottings Lumber Jack, which ' returned his supporters a win dividend of more than £3O when he won the third division of the Waikaura Trot Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on June 19, is engaged in *the Winter Handicap at the Waimate Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. A five-year-old gelding, Lumber Jack, which is trained at Oamaru by J. Halliburton, who races him in partnership with Mr F. Massetti, is by Lucky Jack from Childe de Oro.

Tony Grattan, which is now racing. in the interfests of C. C. Devine, who is training him at Prebbleton, has earned £357 10s in stakes this season. A son of Grattan Loyal and Mary de Oro. Inter-Dominion Trotting Championships The South Australian Trotting Club, subject to the approval of the Trotting League, has fixed the dates of the InterDominion Trotting Championship at Adelaide as February 19, February 26, March 2, and March 5, 1949. Stakes of £B5OO have been allowed for the Grand Final, and the stakes for the whole carnival total £21,000. H. J. Smith Injured H. J. Smith suffered a broken arm when he was thrown from the sulky when driving Navigate on nis private track at Halswell on Monday. The accident occurred when Navigate fell when he attempted to jump a small stick which had blown on to the track. Navigate, which is well forward for his engagements at the National meeting at Addington next month, was uninjured. At Springston S. J. Thomas, who trains his team at Springston, is educating a racy-16oking colt by Gold Paper from Helen Ann for Mr N. G. Mason, who bred a recent win< ner in Mobile Globe from the same mare. Helen Ann, which was bred by Thomas, is by Silk Thread from Helen, which left Flying Helen, the dam of the outstanding three-year-old colt, Congo Song, to Flying Prince. The Tasmanian breeder, Mr E. Tatlow, who had many New Zealand-bred mares at his stud at Hagley, is transferring his horses to Epping, which is about 14 miles from Melbourne. Mr Tatlow, established his Derby Lodge Stud in Tasmania with the great sire Globe Derby, and other well-known sires which followed included Lulu Boy, Concliff, Pedro Pronto, Van Derby (2min 0 2-sssc), Wrack, and Raider.

Some of his most notable mares were Roselawn, dam of Lawn Derby, Van Derby, and Highlawn; Ayr, dam of Springfield Globe, Ayr Derby,, and Commotion; Belle Logan, dam of Lone Raider, Dillon Logan, Logan Derby, Logan Globe, and Jean Logan. Other successful performers bred at Derby Lodge included Kittyhawk, Play away. White Globe, King Cobra, Goldsmith, and Van White. Out of Lynley de Oro J. Magee is educating a neatiy-inade yearling filly at Addington by Light Brigade from Lynley de Cro, which left Tyrone Power to Gold Bar. A winner herself, Lynley de Oro is by Rey de Oro from the Drusus mare, Watty’s Wish, which left other winners, including Pufveyor to Rey de Oro, Robinette to Grattan Loyal, and Netherby to Gaillard. By Pacing Power A. Purdon’s team at Riccarton includes an attractive well-grown yearling colt by Pacing Power from Black Lily, by Grattan Loyal from Black’s Pointer, by Frank Worthy from Moonlit, which left the 1938 New Zealand Cup Handicap winner, Morello, to Rey de Oro. Elmdale, which appears to have benefited by a spell, is back in work in H. Greenhorn’s care at Addington. A gelding by Sandydale from Ulva, which left another winner in Sandy’s Selection to the same sire. Elmdale, which has gained a win and three minor placings this season, should win his way to much better company next season. A Well-built Filly

The two-year-old filly Star Rosa, which was trained for her races earlier in the season by S. A. Edwards, is now being worked at Addington by her owner, R. A. Hamilton. A well-built filly, Star Rosa, which should win her way to good company when she learns to accelerate quickly at the start of her races, is by Gamble from a winner in Starace (3min 17sec), by Nelson Derby from Nanette, the dam of a family of winners, including Privateer, Fragment, Knave of Diamonds, Radical, and Czardas.
