THEFT OF CARGO Thomas Keenan, aged 37, a seaman, pleaded guilty to a charge that at Lyttelton on July 13 he stole 17 yards of furnishing material, valued at £ll 18s, the property of the Blue Star Line, Ltd. Henry Sewell Wayman, aged 28, a lamp trimmer, pleaded guilty to a charge that at Lyttelton on July 13 he stole 20 yards of rayon material, valued at £6, the property of the Blue Star Line, Ltd. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said that the two accused were members of the crew of the South Africa Star, and the goods were found in their quarters. Each accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour, and an order was made that they be placed aboard the ship before it leaves New Zealand waters. Hector McNeil, aged 28, and Neil McKinnon, aged 26, both seamen, pleaded guiltv to a joint charge that on July 1 at Wellington they stole Roman candles and fireworks, valued at 15s, the property of the Blue Star Line, Ltd. Both men were members of the crew of the South Africa Star, and the goods were found behind a false back in the wardrobe of their cabin, said DetectiveSergeant Herron. Each accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour and ordered to be placed aboard the ship before it leaves New Zealand waters. SHIP DESERTION Fred Lili Roper, aged 31, a ship’s fireman, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour when he pleaded guilty to a charge of deserting the overseas ship Kent at Wellington on March 18. FRUITERER FINED Maurice Rossiter (Mr E. B. E. Taylor), trading as the Irish Shamrock Fruit Shop. Ferry road, pleaded guilty to charges of failing to put a price ticket on z lemons and offering to sell grapefruit at a price not in conformity with the price order. He was fined 10s on each charge. REMANDED Andrew Bowers McKenzie, aged 37, a restaurant proprietor, who was represented by Mr D. W. Russell, was remanded to July 22 on a charge that, being the driver of a motor-car in Moorhouse avenue, on July 6, when the car was involved in an accident, causing injury to Derrick Vaughan Mess, he failed to render assistance to the person injured. McKenzie was allowed bail on his own recognisance of £5O and one surety of £5O, and ordered to report daily to the police. James Michael Ludlow, aged 24, a ship’s fireman, was remanded to July 19 on a charge that on July 10 he deserted the overseas ship Corinthic at Wellington. SUSPENDED) SENTENCE A woman, aged 67, whose name was suppressed, appeared .for sentence on three charges of theft. She was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months.
