BROIE’S PROSPECTS IN WINTER CUP Broie registered two first-class performances in running second in the Whyte and the Parliamentary Handicaps at Trentham, and he must now be considered a strong local contender for Winter Cup honours. He was accepted for in the Winter Oats Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, but it has been decided to reserve him for the Winter Cup, and he was scratched at 11.35 a.m. yesterday. Broie has now had five starts in open company and has finished second at his last four, so a winning turn is we’l overdue. In the Parliamentary Handicap last Saturday, he was quite handily placed over the first three furlongs, but along the back straight he was unable to handle the going close in to the rails, and gradually drifted, until, with six furlongs to rtin, he was last. Taken several horpes out from the rails, he gradually improved his position, but when he was moving up on the leaders round the turn he was forced to cover a good deal of extra ground and was carried very wide entering the straight. He put in a splendid finishing run, and though Ruling Master had his measure .at the finish, the fact that he won by only half a length made Broie look a little unlucky. His two races at Trentham have greatly enhanced his reputation.
