LYN V AALS

RACING

GOOD form at f trentham Vaals put up a fine performance IJL the Members’ Handicap at Trento * last Saturday, as she was slow *5 and was still well back at the halfWhen she made her run in the she soon had the measure of the ‘ms. and won even more easily than lea , winning margin indicated. Lyn Vaals ? fl t the peak of her form at present, was rather surprising that she was fitted to go out at double figure odds, a big field. «\ e ; e t month Lyn Vaals won the second jjiSion of the Cornwall Handicap at S'prs’ie but failed nr the second divisnf the mile York Handicap on the day of the meeting. She did not Si again until she contested the Whvte ?,ndicap on the first day at Trentham, S hPn she ran eighth after starting from of the field. Although she was seven lengths behind Cowper, the Snner ; at the finish, she was right up Jith the bunch headed by the third horse, P n?°Saturda.v Lyn Vaals is engaged in J* the Winter Oats Handicap and the nrslow Handicap, and she promises to hTone of the hardest to beat in which* Ever race she is started in. In the WinL Oats Handicap, she has 9-3, and it Siiild seem that the mile journey will arit her- better than the seven furlongs T the Onslow Handicap, a race she won year with 8-0. In this latter race ihe has 9-11 Lyn Vaals is a solid mare Ind she handles bad ground particularly and even with 9-11 will have to be rejected if reserved for that race. A six-year-old mare by Vaals from Homeward. Lyn Vaals is owned and trainLj by Messrs D. and R. Douglas, of Mor”rsville who also race the successful performer. Valley Boy.

Eelated to Longs word Ruling Master, the winner of the Parhamentary Handicap last Saturday, was purchased as a yearling by his present owner, Mr C. Curtis, for 1250gns. He & a half-brother to Sea Spi, a brilliant, but ill-fated filly that was a very successful two-year-old six years ago, and comes from the same family as that noted Trentham specialist and mudlark, Longsword. A five-year-old black gelding, puline Master is by Foxbridge from Ruling Spi. by Chief Ruler from the imported Spion Kop mare, Spionetta. the dam of Longsword. For the greater part of his career, Ruling Master was trained by G. Cobb, but earlier this year hfe was taken over by the veteran Takanini trainer, T. y Verner, and last Saturday was the first success that trainer had had with him in five starts. Ruling Master had not been successful since he won the mile Borough Handicap on a holding track at Avondale last September, beating Lyn Vaals by jjalf a head. He lost all chance at the start in the. Whyte Handicap, and in view of his lack of form it was little wonder that he started a+ long odds last Saturday.

Hurdled Another Runner Dark Arrow was still in a handy position in behind the leading bunch when Precedency fell in the Parliamentary Handicap. Dark Arrow had to hurdle one of the fallen horses and lost what chance he had, and eventually finished fifteenth. ■Hie race did not harm him and he is jn acceptor in the Winter Oats Handicap on Saturday.

Promising Maiden Persian Poem made up a good deal ot ground to finish fourth in the Trial Plate at Trentham last Saturday, and she is likely to have a strong following in the Novice Handicap on Saturday. She was having only her second race and is likely to be much improved by it. Persian Poem is a well-grown grey two-year-old filly by Nizami from Noni by Jay from Lady Pavlova by Spear Dance from Lady Vai by Valkyrian from Lady Matble, by Marble Arch. She is raced by Messrs J. J. and M. H. Crabb and trained at Matamata by G. Salt. Consistent Hack

White Cliffs finished well to get within a length of Mangatiti in the Petone Handicap last Saturday, but it was more or less on suffrance that she finished so close to the winner. Nevertheless, White Cliffs beat the others very easily and registered her sixth second placing since March 13. She is engaged in the Kia Ora Hack Handicap on Saturday, and over an additional three furlongs will have to be considered as she has some useful efforts to her credit over middle distances. White Cliffs is a three-year-old bay filly by Tiderace from Chindara, by Ronsard (by Son-in-Law) from Zirafleet, by Acre from the Birkenhead mare Hermia. The latter was the dam of Horomea, which in turn bred the successful performers, Mittie, Lady Tinkle, Declali, Cramond Pay, and Terry. Best Showing to Date Lunaria’s fifth placing in the July Steeplechase was by far the best showing he nas made as a steeplechaser, and it was the first time that he has got round a genuine steeplechase course without an accident. Last year he won the farcical contest for the Alford Hack Steeplechase at Ashburton, but not before he had r m o 5 and had a fall At Oamaru last month, Canaria ran third in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, but the fences were nothing more than brush hurdles. Last Saturday, Lunaria added to his handicap by losing over 20 lengths at the start. He jumped quite well but he covered a lot of extra ground in the running and he did well to finish so elose up. He is engaged in the Matai Steeplechase on Saturday, and the only horse that finished tn front of him last Saturday that is engaged in the race is Master Play.

From Eulogy Family Although he was beaten into third place in the Trial Plate, Quartz is not likely to be long in winning a race. Starting from wide out, Quartz had worked his way up about third place at the end ef three furlongs, and he held his position in the run home. Quartz is a welldeveloped two-year-old chestnut gelding by Balloch from Endorsement, by Illiad from Endorse, by Paper Money from Epitaph, by Absurd from the famous Eulogy. He is raced by his breeder, Mr A. F. Symes, of Hastings, and trained there by J. P. Ryan. Has Pricked Foot

Trafalgar Day suffered a pricked foot last week, and though he was on the fracks at Awapuni on Tuesday, he was •till lame, and has done no work since the mishap. As he is only a three-year-01, Trafalgar Day will lose nothing by not racing at Trentham. Desert Girl’s Misfortune

Desert Girl was lame after she contested the Parliamentary Handicap, in which she probably ricked herself clearing another horse. Though she appeared to have made a good recovery over the week-end Me was slightly lame after she completed jmcework at Trentham on Tuesday mornarrow Escape After his fortunate escape from injury When Indian Dawn fell in the Parliamentary Handicap, K. Nuttall narrowly escaped another fall on Julius Caesar to the next race, the Members’ Handicap. Near the half mile Julius Caesar appeared to receive a check and almost fell, but was pushed back on his feet by two other horses. Dogal Gem’s Record Regal Gem. which collapsed and died Bhortly after she fell in the straight in Members’ Handicap at Trentham last Saturday, had a short but successful £* rcsr - She was a three-year-old bay ®ly by Lang Eian from Merlyn, by Lackham from Cupid’s Mark, by Arrowsmith “Om Sleeping Beauty, by Boniform from Peace, a mare tracing to the imported Hammock, the ancestress of Maceoome. Platform. Kilwinning, and other good Performers. Regal Gem was raced by her breeder (Mr J. A. Higgs, of Otaki), who submitted her at the 1946 yearling •Wes at Trentham where she was passed to at 350gns. This was fortunate for her "feeder, as she turned out a good racing Proposition. As a two-year-old. she started toree times for a first and a second, wintoog the Maiden Scurry of- five furlongs ■‘Napier Park, and running second to Full « Fun in the Trial Plate at Trentham 22 July- This season she scored two bretx. including a dead-heat, and a second to five starts. She dead-heated with Pan *aila in the Durie Hack Handicap at warsanm on September 6, with the filly Sweet Nymph in third place, ren second to Concrete in the Lansdowne i* aclt 4 ,Handicap at Masterton on October o. the Wellington Guineas winner, immble, being in third place, and won

the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham a week later by half a head from Excellency, Sweet Nymph being fourth. After that she had to be put aside and did not reappear until last Saturday. Altogether she had won a total of £1567 10s in stakes. For her owner her loss was unfortunate in more ways than one as a filly with her record would have had a good stud value. Rising Two-year-olds Parade An interesting innovation at Trentham last Saturday was a parade of rising two-year-olds. About 20 youngsters took part and several of them indicated that they were well forward, much more so than the rising two-year-olds at RiccartOThe first heat was won by Mr J. H. Marshall’s Birdman (Pictavia—Lone Flier) from the same owner’s Barry (Marble Faun—Biddy Machree) with Mr R J. Murphy’s Abbotsford (Tweed ll—Cuddle) th Mr P Roberts’s Lady Lucina (Revelation—Lucullus Lass) won the second heat from Mr A. E. Preston’s His Lordship (Lord Bobs— Subpoena) and Mr T. R. George’s Gold Spi (Gold- Stand —F°x Spi). In the third heat the winner was A G D. and S. Meo’s Survivor (Nep-tune—-Prolyxo), with Mrs s Tplent (Foxbridge—Starbeam) second Mr M.
