THEFT OF SHIP’S STORES

CHIEF STEWARD FINED Cecil Leicester Barsby, aged 21 years, chief steward of the coastal motor-ship Port Waikato, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton yesterday, before Messrs W. T. Lester and W. C. Cleary, Justices of the Peace, to stealing ship’s stores to the value of £1 10s, the property of the Holm Shipping Company. The goods comprised 14 items of foodstuffs in small quantities.

Sergeant L. P. Ricketts said that Brasby was preparing to pay off the ship yesterday afternoon and had packed the goods in readiness to take ashore. He had told the police that he intended to send them in a parcel to England. A fine of £lO was imposed.
