THURSDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid. S.M.) CHARGE OF THEFT Pleading not guilty to a charge of stealing a wallet and contents valued at £5 7s 6d, the property of Edward John Gibbs, on January 9, Wilfred Raymond Holland (Mr D. W. Russell) was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed in the sum of
Evidence was given that the wallet contained an art union ticket, No. 85052, which won a £5 prize* E. J. Gibbs had notified the authorities of his loss, and when Holland wrote claiming the prize, notice of his claim was sent to Wellington. This led to investigations culminating in the charge. In a statement made to the police, Holland claimed that he had found the ticket in Victoria street, and had watched the papers for an advertisement revealing the real owner. When no such notice appeared he claimed, the prize. FINED 10s For casting offensive matter in a public place, Edward Diggs was convicted and fined JQs. BREACH OF PROHIBITION ORDER Leo Peter Kellec was convicted and fined £2 for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. ON LICENSED PREMISES For being on the licensed premises of the Caledonian Hotel after hours on February 22, Norman Lambert was convicted and fined 20s. « LIQUOR NEAR DANCE HALL George Oswald Martin was convicted and fined £3 for having liquor in his possession near a dance hall on February 27.. ■ . - e ' CIVIL CASES (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) JUDGMENT BY DEFAULT Judgment by default was given for the plaintiffs in the following cases:— J J. NiVen and Company, Ltd., v. D. A. Brewer, £4B 15s 3d: J. N. F. Moffat, trading as Amalgamated Chemicals, v. P. J. J. McMullan, £47 6s lOd. JUDGMENT SUMMONS Norman Halligan was ordered to pay William Colin Syme £3 19s 6d forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment. ORDERS FOR POSSESSION Ralph Thomas Beard was ordered to give possession of a tenement, on or before May 18, to William Henry Webber. F. M. Buckingham and M. A. Buckingham were ordered to give possession of a tenement to W. McKay, on condition tha’t alternative accommodation, offered to the defendant, was available..
