BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TO P. S. MCNALLY

P. S. McNally won four of the five championship events (including two in record time) to take the senior championship honours at the Christchurch Boys’ High School annual swimming sports, held at the school baths yesterday. Last year he established record times of 6min 4sec and Imin 22 l-ssec for the senior 440 yards freestyle and the senior 100 yards backstroke respectively, and this year he improved on both these records, his' times being smin 31 2-ssec and Imin 16 l-ssec.

G. C. Penney, with 10 points, was second to McNally (20 points) in the senior championship, and K. Milne and J. E. Barton were third equal with five points.

W. J. Todd won the intermediate championship with 12 points. R. W. Gibbs (six points) was second, and G. Lye (five) third.

In the junior championship, G. R. Wiltshire was first with 11 points, J. C. Abrams (nine points) second, and C. G. Moir third with six points. The record time of 18 2-ssec for the 33 1-3 yards intermediate freestyle, held jointly by C. S. Roscoe (1936) and D. F. Smith (1938) was equalled by A. P. McVeigh.

When the 66 2-3 yards intermediate backstroke event was first swum last year, G. C. Penney took 56 2-ssec for the distance. Yesterday W. J. Todd improved upon this time, taking 52 4-ssec. After the events, Mr Colin Chambers gave a swimming exhibition and demonstrated the use of rubber flippers. Mr D. Begg explained and demonstrated the five groups of dives used in diving championships.

The afternoon was fine and a large crowd of visitors and schoolboys enjoyed the events. Results were:— t
