BRITAIN’S GOLD AND DOLLARS

INCREASED DRAIN IN JANUARY (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 24. Lord Pakenham, in the House of Lords, disclosed that the British Government's efforts to reduce the drain on gold and dollar reserves failed during January when the drain was £57,500,000 compared with £48,000,000 in December.

Reuter’s financial correspondent says that the figure is higher than was expected. He adds that it explains the concern voiced in Britain and other parts of the sterling area.
