CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NORTH ISLAND

(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 26 Surprisingly good tennis was produced in the early rounds of the North Island lawn tennis championships, which opened at Hawera to-day. Rain fell shortly before 5 p.m., and caused the abandonment of play for the day. The match that created most interest was that between Miss B. Potter (Auckland), who is classed among the six or seven best players in New Zealand, with Miss M. Hodges'(Auckland). During the first games, Miss Hodges semed to be outclassed, but she , rallied to win the first set 8-6. However, 1 Miss Potter took the next two sets. Another feature was the closeness of the match between W. T. Pountnev (Auckland) and D Green (Otago). Green took the first set, and in the second set the score was 5-5 when Pountney took the lead and maintained it and won. Some top ranking players are competing. All won the early round matches in which they played. AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S TOUR INVITATION MATCH AT WILDING PARK The secretary of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association (Mr J. M. Hargreaves) has received advice from the New Zealand Association that the dates February 18, 19, 20, and 21 have been approved for the staging of a New Zealand invitation match with the visiting Australian team, at Wilding Park. It is not known who will be in the Australian team, but it is expected that some of Australia’s leading players will be touring, and that the corr.oosition of the team for the Wilding Park match will be four men and four women. The Canterbury Association has issued invitations to leading New Zealand players to participate in the tournament.
