TRAM TRAFFIC MANAGER
UNION OBJECTS TO APPOINTMENT INSULT TO NEW ZEALAND WORKERS “Although we have no prejudice against Englishmen, we view the appointment by the Tramway Board of Mr H. Pointer, of Sunderland, as traffic manager with alarm,” said Mr L. C. J. Southon, president of the Christchurch Tramway Employees’ Union, after a meeting of the executive. “Although we do not know whether the other applicants for the position of general manager were qualified, we do know that some splendid applications were received for the traffic managership.” The board apparently did not take notice of splendid service given over the years by its employees, who rightly expected their just reward, said Mr Southon. Further, the executive considered the appointment as an insult to New Zealand workers.
“The general manager (Mr J. F. Fardell) has said on more than one occasion that the tramway problems of Christchurch are different from those in other places and are purely a local matter,” he said. "We consider that the men best suited to handle these problems are men who have grown up with the service and understand its needs.”
