RETIRING HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES
TRIBUTES TO DR. N. GUTHRIE # AND MISS J. ERWIN Two senior members of the Christchurch Hospital staff who will retire soon were met by the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday and bidden farewell. They were Dr. Nell Guthrie, radiologist at the hospital, and Miss Jean Erwin, sister-in-charge of the physiotherapy department. High tributes to the service of both were paid by the chairman of the board (Mr L. B. Evans), who said that Dr. Guthrie had been with the hospital for about 26 years, and Miss Erwin for 22 years. Although they were not retiring* for some time, the last meeting of the present board was yesterday. Other members supported Mr Evans’s good wishes to Dr. Guthrie and Miss Erwin, and Miss M. McLean mentioned the war service of Miss Erwin. During World War I she was one of the youngest sisters to go overseas, and when a ship on which she was travelling was torpedoed she spent eight hours in the water. In the last war, she was commandant of all members of the Women’s Auxiliary Arn)y Corps in the South Island.
