TWO MEN ESCAPE FROM CONSTABLE

STOLEN CAR FOUND AT ASHBURTON

By throwing an overcoat round the legs of Constable G. Hillyer, two young men who were being escorted by the constable to the Ashburton police station on Tuesday evening, under suspicion of being occupants of a stolen motor-car. made their escape. After entangling the constable, the men disappeared across the railway line on to West street, and a search for them was unsuccessful. The car a Morris 8, which was stolen at Christchurch on Monday, contained a quantitv of goods, believed to have been stolen in recent burglaries in Christchurch and further north. There were also explosives and firearms, in the car. Constable Hillyer. who had a description of the men. found the two suspects in East street, and was taking them to the police station for further questioning. The car. which belongs to Miss N. Lee (Christchurch), is being returned to her.
