INDUSTRIALISING INDIA

PLANS SHELVED BY GOVERNMENT “RESTORING OF PEACE MORE URGENT” NEW DELHI, October 6. The Prime Minister of India (Pandit Nehru) to-day told a meeting in Delhi that the Indian Government had had to shelve industrialisation plans which could transform the whole appearance of India in five or six years because of the more urgent task of restoring peace. He emphasised that the country’s production should be increased. Ways and means of obtaining a more equitable distribution of Wealth should come only after they had reached a target of reasonably high production. He warned the people not to forget that* “industrialisation is essential even for waging war.” India could not depend on any other country for help. In fact, other countries would be ready to exploit the situation for their own advantage. There was also the possibility that certain Indian rulers would try to grab more territory or power for themselves.

Moslems opened their shops in New Delhi to-day for the first time since the disturbances began a month ago.
