RUGBY FOOTBALL

RANFURLY SHIELD RULES “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, October 6. “The time has arrived when the Ranfurly Shield rules should be reviewed and where necessary, altered,” said Mr D. C. Jolly, at a meeting of the management committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union this evening. Outside referees had been discussed earlier, said Mr Jolly. Another rule needing review concerned the holders’ being called on to play two matches in one week because of the heavy programme of challenges. With the 40-hour week employers could not be too liberal in giving afternoons off. Times had changed since the rules had been made. Now that air travel was coming into vogue, the expenses of a union which issued a special challenge required reconsideration. “We should not leave these things until too late,” Mr Jolly said, “and then have to make a hurried decision.” A sub-committee was appointed to review the rules and report to the committee.
