PROPOSAL TO GENEVA CONFERENCE

AUSTRALIA AND CHINA SEEK CONTROLS (Bee. 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 2. Australia and China have moved to limit the action of any ohe occupying Power in ah occupied country in matters of trade, according to officials at the International Trade Conference at Geneva quoted by the British United Press correspondent. “The Australian and Chinese action,” he says, “is aimed at preventing the United States establishing a hbld on Japanese trade. “Australia and China raised the subject when it was suggested that the general agreement on trade tariffs which the conference is preparing should apply to occupied areas. It is ui.derstooa that Australia wants occupied areas to come within the scope of the charter so that trade will be kept open to all.

“China proposed that any interim arrangements made before the peace treaties are concluded should be discussed by the Far Eastern Commission. “It is expected that the subject will be raised again at the United Nations Trade and Employment Conference at Havana next month.”
