WHISTLING BUOY AT HEADS
FISHERMEN’S COMPLAINT TIME SPENT ON RENOVATION Fishermen had made complaints about the time taken for the renovation of the whistling buoy at Lyttelton. At night, and in fog, the buoy was their only guide, said Mr R. E. Cairns, at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The fishermen had been inconvenienced to a /great extent by the long time the buoy had been on its mark, Mr Cairns said, and sometimes they had been held up for hours waiting for a mark, particularly in a dense fog such as that which occurred two weeks ago. Mr Cairns asked if it would not be possible to make the next renovation a quicker one. The chairman, Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon, said that a duplicate buoy was proposed. The secretary, Mr A. L. Burk, said that before the buoy was again taken out, another one would have arrived and would be in place. Not only fishermen had complained—the buoy was generally regarded as an all-important mark. ,
