THURSDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) IMPRISONMENT “There is no reason for a man of this age to be. out of work and sleeping in a railway carriage,” said Senior-Sergeant G. H. L. Holt, when a charge against Charles Mcßride, a labourer, aged 20, of Upper Hutt, of being an idle and disorderly person in that he had Insufficient lawful visible means of support, was heard. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Holt said that Mcßride had been found sleeping in a railway carriage near the Christchurch station in the early hours of yesterday morning. He was sentenced to*one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL To a charge of assault with intent to commit rape, Arthur Ronald Morris, a railway porter aged 24, (Mr J. K. Moloney), pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was fixed at £lOO and two sureties of £lOO, on the condition that the accused report aail-y to the police. DRUNKENNESS Richard Coughlan, alias Scott, a labourer, aged 57, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to being found drunk in Gloucester street on September 25. Senior-Sergeant Holt said that Coughlan had been found very much the worse for methylated spirits. He had three convictions for drunkenness in the last six months, and three more at Dunedin. “I have given you every chance. The only thing to do is to send you to the island,” said the Magistrate, ordering Coughlan to be committed to an inebriates’ home for 12 months. LIQUOR NEAR DANCE HALL John Edward O’Hara and Raymond Eric Reeves were each fined £3 for having liquor near the Realm dance hall on September 6. REMANDS GRANTED Thomas William Parry, a labourer, aged 41, was remanded to appear on October 9 on a charge of breaking and entering the counting-house of the Perfection Ice Cream Company, Ltd., at 300 Manchester street, with intent to commit a crime. Bail was renewed. Gordon Alexander Milne, a labourer, aged 30, was remanded until October 9 on a charge of stealing a bicycle valued at £7 10s, the property of James Hampton. THEFT OF BICYCLE Alfred Henry Leith, aged 66, retired (Dr. A. L. Haslam), pleaded guilty to stealing a man’s bicycle valued at £l4 18s 9d, the property of Colin Stanley Shaw. “You -behaved very stupidly but I am prepared to take your age and previous good record into account. Bicycle thefts usually meet a term of imprisonment,’ said the Magistrate, convicting Leith and ordering him to come up for sentence if called on within 18 months. FINE IMPOSED For casting offensive matter in Manchester street, James Roberts was fined 20s. DESERTED SHIP An able seaman, David Dillwyn Lewis, aged 24, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour for deserting the steamer Stafford at Lyttelton on September 2. OBTAINED LIQUOR For obtaining liquor by falsely representing that he was 21 years of age, Eric Ronald Langley was fined 20s. He pleaded guilty. Accused explained that he and some of his friends had gone into an hotel to have one drink to celebrate a birthday. “I’m afraid it is going to be an expensive one,” said the Magistrate, imposing the fine. CIVIL CASES (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) JUDGMENT FOR DEFENDANT Judgment was given for the defendant in a case in which William Price (Mr R. L. Ronaldson) claimed £4 15s from W. Coull (Mr J. A. Wicks) as the balance of the cost for the erection of a dividing fence. ARREARS OF RENT Judgment was given for the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand (Mr E. L. Tate) against Arthur Hardy for £37 8s 6d for arrears of rent. JUDGMENT BY DEFAULT Judgment was given for the plaintiffs by default, with costs in the following cases —Richard George Bell v. M. C. Kennedy, £l6; Stevens and Sons, Ltd., y. M. M. Flynn, £1 2s 6d; the New Zealand Engineering. Coachbuilding, Aircraft, and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers v. W. M. S. Darrell, 19s 6d; same y. H. L. Mason. £2 5s 6d;. same v. N. D. Wilson, £3 15s 6d.
