LAWN TENNIS

CLUBS OPEN SEASON Tlie Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) officially opened the season of the Sumner Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday. The president of the club (Mr P. W. Murdoch) welcomed the visitors and members, and four leading Canterbury players gave an exhibition game during the afternoon. Mr R. N. C. Hill presented the trophies won during the past season as follows: Most improved junior boy, R. Main; girl, C. Minson; women’s championship singles, Mrs H. S’. Chetwin: men’s singles championship, P. Murdoch; combined handicap doubles. Mrs I. J. Wilson and J. T. Kearney; men’s handicap doubles, J. Kearney and H Kearney: women’s doubles, Misses P. Noonan and P. Manhire.

The season of- the Waimairi Lawn Tennis CTub was opened on Saturday by the president, Mr S. Balfour. There was an attendance of 150, and cups and trophies won during the last season were presented. Mr F. Johnstone, representing the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association management committee, addressed the gathering and complimented the club on the condition of its grounds and growing membership. The first hall of the season was played by Mrs W. H. Jones and Mr G. Radford, foundation members of the club. The South Brighton and Shirley Clubs also opened the season on Saturday.
