BRITISH WHEAT HARVEST
SMALLER YIELD THAN LAST YEAR
LONDON, August 25. The British wheat harvest, which is at flYesent proceeding under ideal conditions, is expected to yield 8,250,000 quarters for Britain and 1,500,000 quarters for Eire. The yield for the United Kingdom will be a little more than half the total harvested in 1943, when there were 3,400XX10 acres under wheat, compared with 1,800,000 acres this year. The total decrease in the yield lor the British Isles compared with the previous season is expected to be 1,500,000 quarters. The fact that all the wheat harvested this year will be dry and immediately ready for milling, will compensate to some extent for the smaller yield. The dry, warrti weather has imS roved crops in the southern counties, ut the western and northern districts have suffered because of the late planting caused by the floods. American reports indicate that record wheat crops are still expected in the United States, but that the drought and heat have reduced Canadian forecasts to a figure 7,500,000 quarters below last year’s production. The Russian crop is reported to be good but most European countries expect a decrease.
