FOOD CREDITS FROM SOUTH AFRICA
COMMENT ON LONDON REPORT
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, August 26. The Cape Town correspondent of “The Times” says that the South African press has received with interest a report from London that the South African Government had agreed to give Britain credits for between £60,000,000 and £80,000,000 for the purchase of South African foodstuffs. Government newspapers in South Africa welcome the report, and even Opposition newspapers are not wholly hostile, says the correspondent. It is generally agreed that the amounts mentioned in the London report are exaggerated, since the Union has not enough foodstuffs to justify such a large loan. On the other hand, it is conjectured that Britain may resume the purchase of other goods—for example, footwear—if the non-discrim-ination clause of the American agreement is modified, and that in that case it would be possible for Britain to import a greater value of goods from South Africa.
