UNION DECLARES LINER BLACK
ASTURIAS BERTHS AT PORT MELBOURNE (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 3. The British transport Asturias was declared black by the Australian Seamen’s Union last night, and was refused the aid of a tug when she berthed at Port Melbourne to-day. The liner had little trouble in coming alongside, and if the wind stays in the present quarter, she will not be affected by a lack of tugs when she leaves for Southampton. The secretary of the union said that on the liner’s last two voyages to Australia, the master of the liner, Captain Berry, has refused to carry 54 Australian seamen who had taken the steamer Katoomba to her new owners in Greece, and who were waiting at Port Said to be repatriated. Other Australian seamen returning from London had reported that Captain Berry had made derogatory and insulting remarks about Australian seamen and waterside workers over the ship’s public address system.
