BOXING

NOVICES IN ACTION The first of a series of competitions for novice boxers was held at the Civic Theatre last night, under the management of the Christchurch Boxing Association.

The nominations for the tourney numbered 62, and included boxers of all weights and of varying degrees of efficiency. The object of the association was to encourage boys and youths to learn the art of boxing. Though nearly all the contestants showed lack of knowledge of the finer points of the sport, the lack of science was made up for in the vigorous fighting, which entertained a very good audience. Lighting restrictions did not allow of the completion of all the classes, and semi-finals and finals will be decided later. The management did splendid work in providing practically a non-stop programme. There were no irritating delays between bouts and as two boxers left the ring other competitors were waiting at the ringside to take their places. This first venture in novice tournaments was successful enough to encourage the Christchurch Boxing Association to provide further entertainment of a similar standard. Following were the results:— Flea-weight.—M. Drewery beat A. Timmings, P. Fletcher beat L. Timming. D. Clarke beat J. Maunsell, D. Maunsell beat K. Weir, D. Hickey beat L. Jones, O. Whitley beat G. Bell. Paper-weight.—N. Davidson beat E. Sibley, T. Lucas beat J. Gundry. Fly-weight.—K. Journey beat R. Gardiner. D. Sandford beat K. Nuttall. Bantam-weight.—G. Sanson beat D. Turvey, R.
