HOUSE BUILDING MATERIALS
PLAN TO ELIMINATE BOTTLENECKS CO-ORDINATING COMMITTEE SET UP (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 9. A new attempt to eliminate delays and bottlenecks in the supply of building materials was announced by the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser), addressing the Labour Party conference. He announced the appointment of Mr M. Moohan, M.P., one of his undersecretaries, as chairman of a new committee of officials charged with the duty of co-ordinating the supply of building materials in an effort to speed up the construction of houses. The Prime Minister said it would be the committee’s duty to search out every available source of supply so that the Labour Party’s pledge to construct 12,000 houses yearly in New Zealand could be fulfilled. Referring to State houses, Mr Fraser said housing settlements already completed were excellent, and better than anything he had seen on overseas tours. The aim in New Zealand was to create garden suburbs. “There had been hitches, but substitutes will be found which will enable the people to get into decent homes,” said Mr Fraser. “We are not dismayed with those difficulties, because we are grappling with them now.”
