UMPIRES FOR TEST MATCHES
HAMMOND’S REPORT TO M.C.C. (Rec. 10 p.m.) -LONDON, May S. "W. R. Hammond’s report to the M.C.C. on the Australian tour discloses t'u:t he twice objected to the reappointment of Messrs Scott and Berwick as umpires, and that his protests received little consideration,” says the “Daily Herald’s” cricket writer, Charles Bray. “Hammond’s objections were over-ruled because, first, he submitted insufficient evidence, and, second, in the opinion of the Board of Control, Messrs Scott and Berwick were the only two umpires good enough for tests. Hammond maintains there were two others as good, if not better. “To avoid the embarrassment of a visiting captain having to make specific charges against an umpire, he urges that, as in England, the names of five or six umpires should be submitted and the two captains left to agree on two.”
