U.S. BROADCASTS TO RUSSIA
COMMITTEE REFUSES FUNDS
APPEAL BY MARSHALL REJECTED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May B. Against the personal plea of the Secretary of State (General George Marshall) to keep the “Voice of America” speaking to the Russian people, the . House Appropriations Committee deleted from the appropriations the entire fund of 31381,220 dollars sought for the State Department’s Division of Information and Cultural Relations, which controls the Government’s overseas broadcasts. The committee contended that the broadcasts were not authorised by any specific law, were "out of tune with American precedents and principles,” and had been badly handled. The Government, it said, should get out of the news business, which should be left to the United Nations and to private enterprises. The "Voice of America” is at present broadcast to 87 countries, in 25 languages. * The committee slashed 162,893,515 dollars from the 535,728,000-doUar bill seeking ■ funds for the State. Commerce, and Justice Departments. The recommendations have yet to be approved by the House.
