IMMIGRATION TO N.Z.

DISCUSSIONS IN LONDON (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, March 31. Recent discussions between the Dominions Office and New Zealand immigration authorities in London on the question of British immigration to the Dominion have emphasised that at present only single men and women can be considered as assisted immigrants. It is estimated that the number of passenger berths available is roughly 70,000 a year under present ebnditions, and only a proportion of these can be allocated to assisted immigrants. It seems certain that the number allocated to assisted immigrants between now and the end of the year must be substantially less than the figure of 10,000 recently suggested. Inquiries are still being received by the New Zealand authorities in London at the rate of 800 to 1100 a week, and any hint which encourages wouldbe immigrants leads to an immediate increase.
