N.Z. ATHLETICS MEETING

DOCKERY BREAKS 440 YARDS RECORD

JUNIOR AND WOMEN’S EVENTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 9. With a splendid run, A. F. Dockery (Canterbury) broke his own record in the -440 yards at the national junior and women’s athletic championships at Athletic Park on Saturday. His time, 51sec, was l-ssec inside the previous record held jointly by J. C. Grierson and himself. The half-mile was another splendid race which resolved into a tussle, between two Otago boys, Richardson, the winner, and Simpson. Richardson impressed both with his superior fitness and determined finish. A stiff breeze worried the athletes and ruled out the possibility of more record breaking achievements. The outstanding sprinter was H. Vosper, Waikato, who spreadeagled th-e field in the 100 yards and the 220 yards. His times were 11 l-ssec and 23sec respectively. In the short hurdles distance, D. Steward (Auckland) was beaten all the way by both Wills (Canterbury) and L. Smith (Wellington) Steward won over the longer distance from Cowley (Waikato). The women’s 75 and 100 yards races were dominated by Miss Ruth Dowman (Auckland), who won convincingly in both. Miss N. Gourley (Otago) retained her 80 metres hurdles title, winning in 12 4-ssec.

G. W. Hoskins (Auckland) was not troubled to take the two-mile event comfortably. The time of 9min 53sec was exCellent, copsidering the conditions. The hammer throw went to D. Monds (Auckland), with a throw which exceeded the New Zealand junior standard of 125 ft by 2ft lOJin. Auckland won both the H. L. Fowers Shield for junior events and the Lumley Memorial Shield for women’s events.

The champion sprinter, John Treloar, who arrived from New Zealand - last night, said that the American Don Campbell, who defeated him over 220 yards, had revealed his weakness. “Campbell always worried me over the last 70 yards in the 220 yards races,” said Treloar Treloar’s coach, Mr P. Walsh, explained: “TTeloar has outgrown his strength. That is why he found trouble with Campbell over the last 70 yards in the 220 yards race; Because of Treloar’s size we will not see the best of him as a runner until he is 23 years of age. He x should then be one of the greatest sprinters the world has seen.” Treloar is 6ft 3in tall, and weighs 13st 101 b. He put on 101 b during his three weeks’ New Zealand tour.
