HONOUR
Sir,—Two news reports lately have interested me and caused me to wonder if, as a Britisher, I am decaying, and if possibly many others of my race are doing likewise. First, five airmen were summoned - for stealing, before a Magistrate who expressed amazement that these five mature individuals could be put in such a position of trust and responsibility. Second a Magistrate in the North Island stated that a man had sold his honour for gold. He referred to a Land Sales prosecution, wherein the seller of a property was alleged to have accepted what is called in these enlightened times a “backhander.” Possibly the seller in this case was a lawbreaker: but, while we are dll entitled to our opinions, many, particularly among those who have anything to sell, would not agree that a man who sells at his own valuation what is his has parted with his honour.—Yours, etc.. PERPLEXED. January 22, 1947.
