UNSIGNED LETTERS AND NEWSPAPERS

Sir, —Many of your readers will be disgusted at the reactionary remarks of the Chancellor of the University regarding letters published in newspapers over a nom de plume. These remarks are a direct threat to the editors of newspapers who publish letters over assumed names, and are an attempt to throttle the freedom of the newspapers to publish such letters, although the Chancellor’s remarks are hidden under a smokescreen of words and puerile reasoning. Letters to the papers are the only means the ordinary citizen has of ventilating public abuses and letting light into dark places.—Yours, etc., January 20, 1947. FREEDOM.
