YEARLING SALES AT TRENTHAM

4000 GUINEAS FOR FOXBRIDGE COLT

SATISFACTORY AVERAGE PRICE “ The Press ” Special Service WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. Australian competition was not quite so pronounced at the second day of the national yearling sales at Trentham today, but, as yesterday, they displayed an interest in any of the better class lots by proven sires. The sale started off on a brisk "note as the second lot to come. forward •in the morning was the first of Mrs G. A. Edmond’s Twyneham stud draft. This was a tall, • splendidly-turned colt by Feltbridge from Hest, the dam of Artificer. Bidding opened at 2000 guineas and was soon finished by a bid of 2700 guineas by Mr T. Impey, of Auckland. The next lot was a bay colt by Foxbridge fitom the former Riccarton mare. Wardress, a winner of many races, including the Canterbury Cup. He was a good colt, but not so attactive as the Hest colt at 1650 guineas. He was knocked down to Mr W. R. Kemball, of Melbourne. One of the most attractive colts of this draft was a medium-sized and wellbalanced chestnut by Salmagundi from Cross Question. He remains in New Zealand, being purchased by Mr N. R. Soilter, of Cambridge, for 1350 guineas. An attractive black colt by Robin Goodfellow, from the Stewards’ Handicap winner, Knockfin, was bought by Mr C. C. Davis, of Christchurch, for 1550 guineas. A halfsister by Neptune to the Riccarton two-year-old, Carry On, was sold to Mr W. R. Ross, of Sydney, for 1600 guineas. The whole of the Twyneham draft was extremely well got up for the sale, and the nine lots offered realised 12.125 guineas, an average of 1347 guineas. This average was a good deal ahead of the average for the Alton Lodge stud, which was the next best of the day, 12 lots realising 11,400 guineas, an average of 950 guineas. The top-priced lot was a brown colt by Balloch from Blandsong a half-sister by Blandford to the sire Battle Song, which' was purchased by Mr D. Lewis, of Sydney, for 1500 guineas. Four other lots in the draft reached four figures. The sensation of the morning came Just before lunch when a brown colt by Foxbridge from Rosespear, an Australian-bred mare by Spearfelt, was offered. He was a big-boned and well-developed colt, not quite so attractive-looking as the Foxbridge colt from Ronetta, which realised 3000 guineas yesterday. There was consequently some surprise when he started off at 2000 guineas and went, up by 500guinea bids to 4000 guineas, at which price he was knocked down to Mr E. Montgomery, of Auckland, who races the successful handicapper, Chung Chong. Although there are still some attractive lots to be sold on the remaining days, it is doubtful if that price will be beaten. The 94 lots sold during the day realised 58,445 guineas, an average df v 621 guineas. This average was not quite as high as that obtained yesterday, but it was still a very satisfactory figure. The aggregate for the two days was 122,340 guineas. The principal sales were:— On account of G. A. Pollard. Te Awamutu: blk f by Medieval Knight—Many Melodies, Mrs F.
