WELLINGTON CUP DAY
RACING
STRONG FIELDS GOLDEN SOUVENIR’S TASK " The Press ” Special Service „ , WELLINGTON,. Jan. 17. Splendid fields will parade for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club s meeting at Trentham to-morrow. Principal attraction will be the Wellington Cup. After two good drying days the track will be reasonably firm and should provide splendid going. Golden Souvenir is likely to be a firm favourite for the Wellington Cup, in which h« is to be ridden by C. T. Wilson. He has done splendidly since he arrived at Trentham and must be near the peak of his form. His stablemate, Bruce, remains a popular choice, and on the dav may even dispute favouritism with Golden Souvenir. Signal Officer has also come into favour. He was below form when he raced at Ellerslie, but has done well since he arrived at Trentham. With Foxwyn and Langue d’Or also possibilities, the contest is likely to be what is expected of one the leading two-mile events of the sea*°n- if Golden Souvenir wins he will establish a weight-carrying record for two miles for any course outside Ellerslie. He has strong opposition, but he is class enough to master his weight. ~ e!d of class sprinters will contest the Telegraph Handicap, and the topweights, Sleepy Fox, Master Dash, and Da Vinei, will have a difficult task conceding weight to a mare of Derene’s calibre.* Sleepy Fox is a freak weight-carrier, and Master 2 ash and Da Vmci invariably do well at Trentham, but at the weights they may not be able to match Derene’s brilliance. Theocritus will carry his share of support, but he has to prove himself on a metropolitan course. • The JUccarton fillies, Privilege and Indian Dawn, seem likely to play a leading part in the Desert Gold Stakes. The former s ability to begin will be to her advantage, and she also represents better class than most of the rest. Indian Dawn impressed last week-end, and is now racing very consistently. At fixed weights she should beat the others, the best of ■which may be Perfect Peace, Rahine, and Argumentative. The first-named stays wel! and is certain to be finishing on. and Rahine should be improved by her race last Saturday. Doubtful starters are Battle Chief •nd Burma in the Te Marua HighDevonogue and Idle Along in the Desert Gold Stakes, Filature in the Pencarrow Handicap, and Blanket and Nanaaki in the Anniversary Handicap.
