MAORI HOME

TROTTING

SHOULD RACE WELL AT FORBURY Maori Home returned to the winning list with an effortless win in the President’s Handicap at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing -Day, and he will probably provide most opposition to the Canterbury pacers in the Musselburgh Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. Owned and trained by B. Rushton, Nightcaps, this son of Dillon Hall and Native Home proved one of the best three-year-olds seen out in Southland last season, when he registered a win and four minor placings in five starts. Driven by his owner, he*won the Knapdale Trot at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting on February 9 at his first start at a totalisator meeting. In that race* he was seer ond into the straight, and he was not troubled in the sprint home to carry on and win by a length and a half from Mistydale, in 3min 25 l-ssec. At his next appearance, he recorded 3min 20 3-ssec when he finished in third .place to Brown Owl and Trustee in the Three-year-old Handicap at Invercargill after being forced to cover some extra ground in the early stages of. the race. Taken to the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting on March 16, Maori Home established a record for three-year-olds in Southland when, after setting the pace for most cf the way in the ‘President’s Handicap, he finished third to Grattan Drive and Jolly Biddy in 3min 20sec. A nicely-moulded gelding, Maori Home is an attractive pacer* and the Musselburgh Handicap should prove a stepping-stone to better company for him. Jottings Belle Header has* been trotting consistently to be placed m her last rhree races, and she may show up from the 48 yards mark in the Vauxhall Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting to-mdrruw. On the West Coast circuit Naughty Girl was hot able to show her best form. The mare has made a good recovery since she returned home, and she may soon win a race for D. Withers. Indigo has two second placings to his credit in his last three starts, and he will probably be sent out favourite for the Electric Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting. Sir Archfo, an aged gelding by Ringtrue from Nella Dillon, is the latest addition to M. Paul’s team.

If Nationalist would, trot up to his best form he would be assured of a prize in the Otago Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting.

Likes Heavy Tracks Water Weed, owned and trained by F. Johnson, Momona, won his first race for the season on a holding track at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on November 2. Driven by J. Walsh, he took the lead with six furlongs to go in the Monowai Handicap, and from then on he was never strongly challenged, winning by 2Q lengths from Pukatee. Similar track conditions ruled for the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 28, and Water Weed conceded starts of up to 60 yards to the President’s Handicap field, and won by three lengths from White Damp. A gelding by Wrack from Ruby Bingen, Water Weed will start from the 24 yards mark in the Vauxhall Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow, and, with conditions to suit him, he should show up at the finish.

Walter Jingle Sold Walter Jingle, which raced well at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday to win the Farmers’ Handicap and to finish in third place to Onerous and Golden Hoofs in the Bruntwood Handicap, was sold after the meeting by Mr C. L. Rhodes, and he has been transferred to M. Paul’s team. Good Record _ Mandrake brought his record to three wins and four minor placings in seven starts this season when he finished in third place to Aspanall and Jill in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and his consistent record indicates ttiat he should be prominent from the 24 mark in the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting to-morrow. Grattan Drive’s Prospects Grattan Drive has been racing consistently this season, and she may top off her list of minor placings with a win in the New River Trot Handicap at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow. Owned and trained, by S. Kirby, the aged daughter of Grattan Loyal and Auburn Sun gave a solid display at the same club’s meeting on January 4, when she finished in second place to Stirling Castle in the Rosedale Trot Handicap after being slow away.

King’s Colour King’s Colour, a six-year-old gelding by Sandydale from Her Majesty, is now being trained at Te Awamutu by E. N. Kepnerley, whose team includes recent winners in Single Direct, Noble' Star, and Best Girl. Bred by T._ H. Gunning. Oamaru, Her Majesty, the dam of King’s Colour, is by Matchlight from Final McKinney, -which took a record of 2min 10 3-ssec many years ago. By Young McKinney, Final McKinney is out of a good producer in the Logan Pointer mare. Glade, which left a family of Winners including Ballade, Gyrate, Pink Lady, and Sylvan, to Nelson Bingen, Highrate to Guy Parrish, and Sunny Corner to Travis Axworthy.

Won at Timaru The three-year-old filly Coral Princess gave an impressive display to win her division’ of the Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and, on that form, she should prove hard to beat in the Electric Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. Good Mare

Springfield Girl, a daughter of Springfield Globe, proved that she is one of the best mares racing in Australia when she won the Harold Park Handicap at the Harold Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Sydney on December 21. A winner at her two previous starts, Springfield Girl started from the 48 yards mark, and after, being at the rear of the field for more than a mile she commenced a strong run with two furlongs to go. Capably handled by her owner, S. McMillan, Springfield Girl raced round the field to join Leila Pauline in the lead and in a good finish she won by a neck in 3min 17sec. It is unfortunate that the mare was not nominated for the InterDominion Championships in Perth, as she is now racing solidly, and she would have been a worthy representative for New South Wales.

Changed Over Monagh Leagh, which raced as a pacer in the early part of the season, has been converted to the trotting gait, and will compete in the Otago Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting. Trained for Mr A. Robertson "by N. McLellan, Monagh Leagh is a six-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from an Adioo Guy mare. Likely Type Spring Parade’s record this season includes a fine performance to win the Ohai Harness Handicap by four lengths from Sir Hall at the Wairio Jockey Club’s meeting on November 23 and, on that form, the must be conceded a chance from the 36 yards mark in the first division of the Waverley Trot Handicap at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow.. Spring Parade comes from a good family, and, on breeding, he should take a tight mark. By the imported Fremont, he is out of Deanna Durbin, by Grattan Loyal from Una Dillon, byHarold Dillon from Theda Bara, by Van’ Coronado from Norice.
