YEARLING SALES AT TRENTHAM

AUSTRALIAN BUYERS ACTIVE RECORD FIRST DAY TOTAL From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, January 16. Strong Australian competition was a feature of the 1947 national yearling sales which opened at Trentham to-day. Twenty-five lots made lOOOgns or more and the day’s total of 63,895gns was easily a record for a first day, as was the average of 709gns for the 90 lots sold. The sale opened on a quiet tone, the first two lots offered on account of Mr T. A. Duncan, of Hunterville, being passed. The first lot sold was a brown filly by Brer Fox from Parish Queen, offered on account of Mr J. C. Cothier, of Matamata, which made 170gns. From that stage bidding became brisker as the better lots came forward and Australian competition made itself evident. The first lot to top four figures was a bay filly by Balloch from Fintry, a daughter of Desert Gold, which the Randwick trainer, C. McLoughlin, bought for 1400 gns. Two lots later he paid lOOOgns for a colt by Balloch from Romano, the first of the Sasanof stud’s draft to come into the ring.

The next lot from the draft saw the former New Zealander, Mr W. R. Kemball, make the first of several high-priced purchases—a shapely well-bodied colt, the first of Probation’s stock to enter the ring—which he bought for 1650gns. The whole draft from the Sasanof Stud came forward in excellent order, and the bargain of the draft appeared to be a brown colt by Robin Goodfellow from the Martarrna mare Marsaone, which made 850gns. Other Australian buyers operating were the prominent Randwick trainers Bayley Payten and R. Abbot, and Messrs F. S. Israel, C. H. Tyler, D. Lewis, and T. G. Robinson. A feature of the sale was the competition for the Trelawney Stud’s draft. The 10 lots sold realised 16,480gn5. The first lot to come forward was a brown colt by Foxbridge from Talla Quex, a brother to Competitor. He was a rangy colt showing plenty of scope for development. Bidding opened at lOOOgns and advanced rapidly to 2000gns. A bid of 2250gns by the Waimate trainer, J. Mitchell, secured the colt. The next lot, a nicely moulded colt, a typical Foxbridge from Konnetta, aroused keen competition and Mr Kemball had to go to 3000gns before he secured him. The Nizami colts in the draft also drew strong Australian competiiton, and four of them will leave the country. . For the more lots bidding was brisk throughout the afternoon and in addition to. those for Australia, purchases were also made for India and South Africa. « Next to the Trelawney Stud the best average was obtained by the Sasanof Stud, whose four lots averaged 1400gns. Mr E. E. Steele, of Windsor Park Stud, Oamaru, sold four lots, all by Finis, for 4975gn5. The progeny of Finis attracted, much more competition this year, and the top priced lot, a colt from Kama, was an impressive individual.

The sales will continue to-morrow, and there are many more attractive offerings to come forward.
