FRENCH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
SOCIALIST ELECTED PRESIDENT
PARIS, Jan. 14. Mr Vincent Auriol (Socialist) has been elected President of the French National Assembly. He secured 294 votes out of 572. An M.R.P. candidate was second with 194 votes.
Mr Champetier de Ribes, the M.R.P. candidate, has been re-elected president of the Council of the Republic (the new French--Upper House). In the third ballot Mr de Ribes tied with the Communist candidate, Mr Maranne. Both received 129 votes, but Mr de Ribes was elected under the constitutional provision that seniority in age shall be the deciding factor in such a situation. Mr de Ribes is 64 and Mr Maranne 58.
A Radical candidate, Mr Casser, dropped out earlier.
