SHORTAGE OF MOTOR VEHICLES
AUSTRALIAN DEMAND PUT AT 150,000
(Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 14. The outlook this year for potential new. car buyers with limited incomes is bleak, according to a survey of the motor trade in Australia. It is estimated that * the Australian market could absorb ,150,000 vehicles even at the current high prices. World-wide labour troubles and shortages of materials are the main factors in the shortage of vehicles in Australia. Progress in 1946 was not as great as was anticipated, because although a steady flow of new chassis arrived from Britain, shipments from Canada and America fell far short of expectations.
Local strikes and bottlenecks held up supplies of Australian-made components and bodies to complete 130,000 imported chassis.
In 1938-39, a total of 86,404 new automobiles was sold in the Commonwealth, compared with 8964 in 1944-45 and 12,809 in 1945-46. The disposal of 78,000 Army vehicles of all. types and 19,800 motor-cycles has helped.
