MASTER MARINER

A WELL-BRED PACER Master Mariner will make his first appearance, since being trained by H. J. Smith at Halswell for Mr F. W. McGill, in the first division of the Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting. A five-year-old gelding, Master Mariner is a brother to the speedy Navigate, which has already had three wins , and three minor placings this season. Master Mariner was educated ahd trained for his early races by J. Walsh, of Gore, and he showed encouraging form for him last season when he secured three minor placings, his best effort being a second placing to Town. Talk in the first division of the Trial Handicap at the Invercargill Trotting Club's meeting on March 2. In that race he appeared unlucky, as he finished two and a half lengths behind the winner after losing a lot of ground at the start. Rocks Ahead, the dam of these horses, was a fine performer with a record of 2min 39see to her credit. Bred by Mr H. Hunter, Wyndham, Rocks Ahead is by Happy Voyage from First Water, by Harold Rothschild from Red Diamond, by Prince Imperial from a mare by Blackwood. Master Mariner is taking time to strike form; but under Smith’s guidance he should eventually pay his way.

Jottings Waroonga, which will start in the second division of the Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting, is trained at Addington by L. O. Thomas for Mr T. L. Thomas. A four-year-old gelding, Waroonga is by Dillon Hall from Reylena, which is by Rey de Oro from Franzalena.

Legionnaire appears to be on the improve, and he may win the Farmers’ Handicap at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. Swaledale has won at his last two starts, and he must be conceded a chance from the 36 yards mark in the Levels Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting. Direct. Heir has been racing well, and he will probably be sent out favourite for the Visitors’ Handicap at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting. Blackdale has been prominent in his recent races, and he may show up over the mile and flve.furlohgs in-the Waimate Handicap at Washdyke to-day.

Won at’Westport Owned land trained at Greymouth by T. W. Lalor, Julie has shown good form this season to win the Dunollie Handicap at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting on October 28 and the Granity Handicap at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting on December 27. The daughter of Quite Sure 'and Bonny Betty will race at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-day, and she will then be taken to the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, which will'be held on January 18 and 25. Julie is a useful type, and she should pay expenses on the trip. From a Good Mare

The three-year-old filly. Uranium, is an interesting acceptor in the Fairlie Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting. Owned and trained by F. Young, Methven, Uranium is by Grattan Loyal from Satin Queen, which left other winners in Warwick to Jack Potts. Battle Colours to Wrack, and Limerick Pride to Logan Fraser. Bred by Mr A. Green (Alford Forest), Satin Queen is by Guy Parrish from Lady Locanda, by Brent Locanda from a General Lyons mare. Large Nominations The Forbury Park Trotting Club has received large nominations for all the events at its two-day meeting, which will commence on January 18; and present indications rre that the fixture will be one of the most successful held by the club. The 4min 27sec class two-mile Dunedin Cup Handicap of £1750 has attracted a field of 17 high-class pacers, and they should provide a race in keeping with the good stake offered. Brackets

The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting:—Kingsdown Handicap, Contraband and Templar; Fairlie Handicap, Aries and Baadin, Coral Princess and Economist, Eileen Scott and Expensive, Gallant Thorpe and Garforth, Glen Devon and Great Wonder, Hardy Annual and Headland, Ideal Girl ahd Incredible; Levels Handicap, Rose o’ Day and Tungsten Steel; John Hole Memorial Handicap, Mandrake and Aspanall; Waimate Handicap, Parwrack and Quite Right; Pareora Handicap, Hal Derby and Checkmate, Rose o’ Day and Tungsten Steel; Taiko Handicap, Lanaco and Maalesh. Won as a Trotter

Previously trained tty her owner, V. Alborn, at Addington, Noble Lady has been acquired by Messrs K. J. A. Purdon and R. S. Thomson, and is now being trained by the latter. An aged mare by Nobleman from Wdld Chenault, Noble Lady will race in the interests of her new owners as a pacer in the third division of the Fairlie Handicap at Washdyke to-day. Noble Lady showed her best form when trained at Methven by F. M. Brown last season when she outclassed a field of trotters in the Kingsdown Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on January 12; but she did not carry on as expected and has been unplaced in her nine races since then. <. -

Trained at InvercarglM The Grattan Loyal gelding. Lord Grattan, which will race against the improving trotters at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting, showed his best form when trained by L. Boivin, Invercargill, when he won the Gore Handicap at the Southland Club’s matinee meeting on November 24, 1945. Now trained by A. McLellan, Jnr., Invercargill, Lord Grattan is an aged son of Ivy Peterson, which left a smart pacer in Lord Peterson to Grattan Loyal. Bred by Mr P. Tod, Lincoln. Ivy Peterson is by Rey de Oro from Lady Peterson, by Petereta from Vesta, by Lincoln Yet from a St. Leonard mare. Reefton Prospect Lockheed will be driven by his owner, E. A. Collett, at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting to-day. This aged son of Logan Fraser and Doll Dance is giving away starts in both of his races: but his track work at New Brighton has been impressive and he should earn some of the prize-money. Has Some Ability Doreano, which is now trained by S. T. Webster, Tinwald, for Mr A. E. Dawson, lost his chance when he was slow away in the Mitcham Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting; but. if he begins correctly, he may show up in the Kingsdown Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. An aged gelding, Doreano is by Quite Sure from Princess Joffre, which is by Author Dillon from Lady Joffre.
