ST. MICHAEL’S SCHOOL
Special prizes were distributed as follows at the annual prize-giving ceremony of St. Michael’s Church primary day school by Miss E. M. Cardale:—Religious knowledge: Form 11, David Tilley; Form I, Natalie Brown; Standard IV, Valerie Bollington; Standard 111, Anne Southerwood; Standard 11, Lim Wong; Standard I, Rosemary Simon. Latin prize: Jack Wong. Prefect’s prize: Michael Graveston. SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL ‘‘The founder of the Parents’ National Educational Union used to tell us that we should aim to create *such interest that the child would work for the sake of working and not for a prize. That is why you see no prizes here to-day,” said the headmistress of Selwyn House School (Miss D. Govan) at the end-of-year ceremony, h’eld yesterday. ‘‘l should like to make a plea to all parents to allow their children to develop naturally the gifts which they have, and not to force them into moulds where they do not fit,” Miss Govan continued "Parents do both their own children and others a disservice if they compare them one with another. There are no class fdaces at Selwyn House, so that the work s not marred by an attempt to beat someone else.” In the absence of the chairman of the board of governors (Mr E. J. Chennells), Mr W. O. Campbell, a member of the board, presided. In spite of difficulties, the school had had a successful year, Mr Campbell said. The school house was already fully booked for 1947. The following awards to the various "tribes” of the school were announced:— Good work shield, Arawa; good conduct shield, Waikato; sports shield. Ngatiawa: swimming cup, Arawa; nature cup, Ngatiawa; drama cup, Arawa; drill cup, Ngatiawa. The character shield was awarded to Aline Studholme. Other awards were:—improvement in swimming, Susan Jennings; improvement in tennis, Anne McKergow; senior swimming championship, Aline Studholme and Joanna Cracroft Wilson; junior swimming championship, Joanna Wheeley; senior sports championship, Anne McKergow; junior sports championship, Janet Osborne. During the afternoon, a play, "The Wooden Walls,” dealing with the life’of Themistocles, was presented by pupils of the upper school. Those taking part included Joanna Cracroft-Wilson, Joanna Wheeley, Adrienne Adair, Priscilla Murray. Juliet Crombie, Mary Radcliffe, Diana Menzies, Anne Beamish, Aline Studholme, Ingrid Coberger. and Anne McKergow. Other attractive items were a nursery fantasia, classical dancing, and the singing of “Veni Sancte Spiritus” by pupils of the school’s Latin class.
