PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES
CHRISTCHURCH WEST HIGH SCHOOL
The official roll at March 31, 1946, was 743, comprising 328 boys and 415 girls, exceeding the record roll of 1945 by 14, said Mr C.,A. Noble, headmaster of the Christchurch West High School, in his report at the annual prize-giving ceremony last evening. Accommodation, particularly for art, cookery, and sewing courses had to be carefully watched, and the lists for the home course had to be closed when it became apparent that the rooms for the courses mentioned were fully occupied. Staff changes at the school were abnormally high during the year; but it probably represented the settling process after the war, Mr Noble said. Staffing problems during the war were difficult, and this was the fist year, during his six years’ term as headmaster, in which the school had its full complement of permanent teachers.
Interest in music had continued to expand in the school. To secure a supply of developing players for the orchestra violins were bought and a class instituted. The project had been backed by the Parents’ Association, which in the initial stages, guaranteed the tutor’s fees when it appeared doubtful if nonanal staffing allowances would permit his employment. A full programme of sports had been carried out during the year, several teams securing a number of successes in competitions conducted by s the Canterbury Cricket Association, the Boys’ Cricket Association, the Canterbury Rugby Union, and other sports bodies. Sports teams also visited and received visits from schools tn outside districts, Mr Noble concluded.
