WHY PENALISE MATRIMONY?

Sir,—Now that the politicians are preparing their platforms, it is pertinent to inquire why matrimony is penalised. Under the existing law, if a man, who is earning £5OO a year marries a woman who has an unearned income of £5OO a year, their combined income tax is increased by £l7 5s a year. It would be helpful to hear from Mr Holland and Mr Fraser what they think of this method of encouraging “the most desirable immigrants.”—Yours, etc., M H G October 21, 1946.
