HARRYING DUCKS

Sir,—On the Wairarapa stream, between Garden road and Heaton street, local primary school boys have this season systematically harried the ducks and their broods of ducklings, with the result that the clutches have been rapidly decimated. The boys pursue the birds with stones until ducklings are killed, or separated from their mothers to die, while the adults are sometimes injured. At times the ducklings are captured and. from conversation, it is apparent that in at least one home a duck is being raised in captivity. Again, a youth who lives on this stretch of stream has been observed shooting at ducklings with an air gun and was seen to kill one. Perhaps the school authorities could do something; and it might be useful for parents to inquire what their sons do for an hour or two after'school of an afternoon.—Yours, etc., DUCK. October 17, 1946.
