ST. SAVIOUR’S HOME
NEW WING FOR SENIOR GIRLS A modern new* wing to accommodate senior girls at St. Saviour’s Home, Shirley, in a self-contained unit was dedicated and opened by Archbishop West-Watson on Saturday afternoon before a large gathering. The wing comprises a large dining-room, kitchen, two dormitories, two recreation rooms, a nursery, surgery, and sick room. It has a northern aspect and is flooded with sunlight most of the day. It is joined to the older part of the home >y the administration block between. It was with feelings of thankfulness that those intimately associated with the home attended the ceremony. Archbishop West-Watson said. Many had contributed funds for the work, careful planning had been done, the authorities had granted permission to proceed in difficult times, and the contractors had taken, great personal interest. The idea of cottage homes appealed to members of the guild, but the site and existing buildings caused such plans to be modified. It was a considerable advance, however, to be able to offer the senior girls their own section. Throughout, the aim had been kept foremost to make the building a home and not an institution. He expressed regret that the matron (Mrs Wilson) would shortly be retiring, and thanked her for her service. He also welcomed Canon A. H. Acheson as the new chaplain. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) congratulated all concerned on the beauty and convenience of the new wing. Both the State and the Church now recognised fully the claims of the child, and it was a source of satisfaction that Christchurch was able to meet cases of need with such attractive children’s homes. The care of children was a cause dear to his heart, and he commended all concerned for the great work being done and for their efforts to reduce the circumstances leading to the need for such homes. The contractor (Mr C. S. Luney) made a presentation to the archbishop and one of the girls presented a bouquet to Mrs Wilson. Dean Warren presided. The Cfichton Cobbers’ Club Band played musical selections and girls of the home sang songs.
