TEMPERANCE UNION

DISTRICT CONVENTION Indignation at the Royal Commission’s recommendation of altered hours for the sate of liquor, was expressed yesterday at the Canterbury District Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, held in the Central Mission rooms, Cathedral square. A summary of the findings of the commission was given by Miss C. Henderson.

Branch reports were received from Papanui, Kaiapoi, Bryndwr, Sydenham, Spreydon, Linwood ,and youth branches, and the afternoon session was opened with devotions ted by Mrs Weston, Oxford. It was reported that much visiting of patients in the mental hospital was done by members of the branches. “Trumpeter, what are you sounding now?” was the subject of a paper written by Mrs'Harwood, of Ashburton, and read at the morning session. The opening devotions were ted by Mrs Millar (Tinwald), and reports were received from Waimate Woolston, and Riccarton. At the opening meeting on Wednesday, Mrs F. J. T. Grigg presided, and the report from South Canterbury was read by Mrs Millar, of Tinwald, and that of. the North Canterbury district by Mrs R. Black. It was stated that the White Ribbon magazine had been placed in 53 institutions. Concert programmes had been taken regularly to the reformatory. Five minute papers on gambling, given by Mrs Ancell, and on equal rights for women given by Mrs Ashton, of Waimate, provoked interest and discussion. Branch reports from Ashburton, New Brighton, and Christchurch Central were received’ at this session. The Mayoress (Mrs F. Hardy Cookson) and Miss Mary McLean were welcomed among the guests at the afternoon session. The Mayoress welcomed the delegates visiting Christchurch, and Miss McLean spoke as president of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women. Mr F. Chesmar, representing the youth branch of the W.C.T.U., was another speaker. Songs were sung by Mrs Goldman and Mrs C. L. Crowley. Mrs Crowley later addressed members on the subject of monetary reform. Reports of the Temuka and Opawa branches were received.
